- Flying Safari to Tarangire & Ngorongoro
Introduction
Escape the turquoise shores of Zanzibar and trade the ocean breeze for the dust of the African bush. This four-day flying safari carries you from the spice island to Arusha — the gateway to northern Tanzania’s greatest wilderness areas — before immersing you in two of Africa’s most celebrated destinations: Tarangire National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater.
Tarangire is the hidden gem of the northern circuit — a landscape of ancient baobab trees, seasonal swamps, and riverine forest that draws the largest elephant herds in East Africa. A scenic overland drive then connects you to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where a descent into the crater floor delivers one of the most concentrated wildlife experiences on the planet, including the endangered black rhino. Two iconic parks, one seamless journey.
Day 1 — Zanzibar to Arusha, then Tarangire National Park
Your morning begins at Zanzibar’s Abeid Amani Karume International Airport, where you board your scheduled charter flight to Arusha. On arrival, your guide and private 4×4 vehicle are waiting to meet you — and the safari begins immediately. The drive from Arusha to Tarangire takes approximately two hours through Maasai steppe and open savannah, with the first giraffe and zebra often spotted before you even reach the park gate. Arrive in time for a welcome lunch at camp, followed by your first afternoon game drive along the Tarangire River. Elephant herds of fifty or more are commonplace, and lion, leopard, wild dog, and oryx are all regularly encountered. Return to camp for dinner and your first night under the stars.
Day 2 — Full Day, Tarangire National Park
A full day to explore one of Tanzania’s most underrated parks. Rise early for a dawn game drive along the Tarangire River — the dry-season lifeline that draws wildlife from across the region. Massive elephant families wade through the shallows while hundreds of bird species fill the acacia canopy above. After a bush breakfast in the field, the afternoon takes you into the park’s quieter southern reaches, where vast swamp systems attract buffalo, zebra, and wildebeest in extraordinary numbers. Sundowners on the open plains as the ancient baobabs turn to silhouettes against the fading sky.
Day 3 — Tarangire to Ngorongoro Conservation Area (Overland)
After an early morning game drive and a final look at Tarangire’s elephant herds, you depart camp for the overland journey to the Ngorongoro highlands — a scenic drive of approximately two to three hours through Maasai country and rolling highland farmland. The road climbs steadily as you approach the crater rim, the air cooling and the vegetation shifting from dry savannah to lush montane forest. Arrive at your crater-rim lodge in time for lunch, with sweeping views across the caldera already yours to enjoy. An afternoon game drive descends into the crater floor, where approximately 25,000 animals reside year-round — lion prides, hippo pools, vast herds of wildebeest and zebra, and with some luck, the critically endangered black rhino. Return to the rim for dinner as the crater disappears into the darkness below.
Day 4 — Ngorongoro Crater, then Arusha Departure
Rise early for a final full morning inside the crater — tracking lion, searching for rhino, and pausing for a picnic lunch beside the hippo pools, a long-standing Ngorongoro tradition. After lunch, ascend the crater rim and begin the overland drive back to Arusha, arriving in the late afternoon. Our team will assist with onward connections at Arusha Airport or your hotel. Whether you are heading home or continuing to another destination, your four days in the bush come to a close with memories that will last a lifetime.
